Gradishte Monastery
Description:
On the top of the mountain in Bularitsa, near the road to Bar just 4 km from Petrovac, the Gradishte Monastery is located. From here there is a magnificent view of the sea and the beautiful surrounding nature. This architectural monument is known for its fresco painting, which dates back to the late Middle Ages.
The monastery of Gradishte was founded during the rule of the country by the Nemanic dynasty, although the first mention of it dates back to the first half of the XIV century. Before the foundation of the monastery in ancient times, an ancient cemetery and residential buildings called "Gradzhevine" were located on this site, thanks to which the monastery received its name (Gradats or Gradishte).
The monastery at that time was close to the Turkish border, because of which it was fenced with fortress walls, a high tower and loopholes. Their ruins have survived to our time.
