Archaeological Monument of Copacilla

arica, Arica y Parinacota region, Chile

Description:

The Copacilla Archaeological Monument is located in northern Chile, in the Arica y Parinacota region, northeast of the major city of Arica. The name “copacilla” from the language of the Quechua Indians is translated as “dust” or “ashes”. This is a fortification structure that was created in the distant XII century. In 1983, the complex was declared a national monument.

In 1979, the Copacilla defensive complex was restored as a mock-up at the University of Tarapac in Chile. This unique structure was completely recreated from the materials of archaeological excavations conducted here.

The fortress is surrounded by rocks and is located on a hill, so it is difficult to approach it from the outside. The outer walls are double and parallel, equipped with loopholes and parapets. Inside, according to the plan, there was a circular building, as well as everything necessary for life in the event of a long siege of the fortress.
