Fort Alakran

Alarkan peninsula, Arica, Chile

Description:

Fort Alacran is an ancient Spanish fort in the Chilean city of Arica, on the peninsula of the same name. Its name in Spanish means “scorpion”. The fort was built by the Spaniards in the XVII – XVIII centuries, on one of the rocks towering above the terrain, and served to protect the city and the royal vault, full of precious stones and silver, from attacking pirates from the Pacific Ocean.

In 1868, the fort was destroyed by a powerful tsunami, only some parts of the building were restored. Now on the site of an ancient defensive structure are popular, among celebrities from around the world, yacht clubs. Locals say they have seen stars such as Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Chris Thomas in the Fort Alarcan area more than once.
