Chungara Lake
Chile, Arica, Lauca National Park
Description:
Lake Chungara is one of the highest mountain lakes on the planet, located in Lauca National Park in northern Chile. The lake is located in the mouth of an extinct volcano at an altitude of 4517 meters above sea level. The lake is surrounded by several mountain peaks: the double volcano Payachata, composed of volcanoes Parinakota and Pomerape, Mount Sahama and the volcano Gualjatiri. Near Chungara is Lake Kotakotani.
The lake was formed as a result of the eruption of the Parinakota volcano, 8,000 years ago, which with its huge eruption blocked the beds of mountain rivers, as a result of which Lake Chungara was formed. In the valley of the lake is the original and rich flora and fauna with more than 130 species of different plants and animals. Here live protected Wichachacha, Andean condors, llama and Aymara alpaca. The lake is inhabited by a variety of birds, especially distinguished by its beauty flamingos. The amazingly beautiful landscapes of mountain peaks that surround the lake will leave unforgettable emotions and memories, and lovers of outdoor activities will be able to climb to the top of one of the snow-capped volcanoes.
The lake can be reached only by land transport, covering several hundred kilometers. Here you can even stay overnight, in small cozy houses that are specially prepared for tourist visits. Or you can set up your tent right by the water of the lake.
