Parinakota volcano

Chile, Arica, Lauca National Park

Description:

Parinacota volcano is a dormant volcano located on the border of Chile and Bolivia and is part of the Lauca National Natural Park. The height of Parinakota volcano is 6348 meters, the width of the crater is 300 meters. The Parinakota volcano, together with the Pomerape volcano, form the Payachata complex, in front of which is the high mountain lake Chungara.

The last eruption of the volcano dates back to 290 AD, which produced 6 kilometers of cubic lava, which poured 22 kilometers to the west, and blocked the river beds. This is how Lake Chungara was formed. The first ascent to the summit of Parinakota volcano took place in 1928, by climbers Joseph Prem and Carlos Teran.

To date, it is relatively easy to get to the volcano, the road to the top is accessible even to not very experienced climbers. Tourists will climb the slopes, covered with snow and gravel, the inclination of which does not exceed 35 degrees. At an altitude of 5300 meters, in the saddle between Parinakota and Pomerape is a great place where you can make an intermediate camp. Equipment for the expedition can be rented in the Bolivian village of Sahayama, which is 27 kilometers from the volcano.
