Santiago

Mount Santa Lucia

Chile, Santiago, Sta Luc a, 300-384, Santiago Metropolitan Region

Description:

The Spaniard Pedro de Valdivia was an active participant in the campaigns of conquest on the territory of modern Venezuela and Peru. In 1540 he was appointed the first governor of the Spanish colony of Chile. And in 1541, the conquistador climbed the hill of Santa Lucia and ordered the foundation of the city of Santiago.

Like many other cities, Santiago grew gradually around the mountain. The expansion of the city took place under the clear guidance of the founder in the best Spanish architectural traditions, and this original layout is preserved to this day.

Today, Santa Lucia is in the heart of Santiago, although it offers a completely different view. Throughout its history, the city was repeatedly attacked by Indians and experienced more than one devastating earthquake, when the city was almost rebuilt.

You can climb the mountain using a funicular, but it is traditionally believed that you need to climb the top on foot. It offers a magnificent view of the city, modern tall buildings, streams of green streets and islets of parks.
