Cathedral of Santiago de Chile

Calle Plaza de Armas 444, Santiago, Chile

Description:

The Cathedral of Santiago de Chile is the main Catholic shrine of Santiago and the country, which is the residence of the Archbishop of Santiago de Chile. It is part of the architectural ensemble, together with the bishop's palace and the arrival of the Tabernacle. It is a national monument of Chile since 1951 and is located in the main square of Santiago – Plaza de Armas, in the center of Chile.

The Cathedral of Santiago de Chile was built in the Baroque style and its construction, which was dedicated to the Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God, lasted for 52 long years. Work on the cathedral was begun in 1748 by architect Antonio Acuna, in accordance with the plan of the Bavarian Jesuit brotherhood of Kahler, and completed in 1800, when the last two bell towers were added. The last reconstruction took place in 2006, when the main altar was rebuilt, the walls and crypts of the Archbishop and Saints Diego Portales and Jose Thomas Ovallevo were repaired.

One of the most interesting attractions of the cathedral are the carved and wooden pulpit of the XIX century and the organ, which were made in the workshop of Caler de Tango in 1756. Here you can visit the sacred liturgies and touch the tombs of the great personalities of Chilean history and the young heroes of the battle of La Concepcion.
