Presidential Palace

Teatinos 50-100, Santiago, Regi n Metropolitana, Chile

Description:

The Presidential Palace of La Moneda was built by the Spanish colonial administration of Chile in 1805 by the Italian immigrant Joaquin Toeschi.

The architecture of the palace belongs to neoclassics and is a vivid example of the model by which other classical buildings of this type were erected in the XVIII century.

Previously, the palace was used as the "La Moneda" - the mint of Chile, which was located here in 1814-1929.

Today, the palace serves as the official residence of the President of Chile, as well as the Ministry of the Interior and the secretariats of the President and the government.

Despite this special status of the palace, in 2003 President Ricardo Lagos opened the palace for tourists, and in 2006, in front of the southern facade of the palace, the Citizens Square appeared, on which a cultural center was erected and a monument to President Arturo Alessandri was built.

While in the presidential palace, you should pay special attention to the traditional changing of the guard, which takes place near La Moneda every day.
