Aqaba Bay
Egypt, Dahab, North of the Red Sea
Description:
The morphology of the coastline of Dahab is characterized by a curved sea spit, which consists of river sediments carried by the sea current from the mouth of the wadi-Dahab, this spit surrounds a shallow lagoon, but active deposition at the bottom of the lagoon will turn it into a salt marsh. The bay lies between hills that rise dramatically to an altitude of about 2,000 feet (600 meters). Shipping is hampered by the narrow entrance to the bay off the Strait of Tiran and its islands, coral reefs and sudden storms.
The Gulf of Aqaba is part of the complex East African Rift System, and its summit touches the borders of Egypt, Israel, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Although Dhahab in Egypt is the only protected harbor along the Gulf, Jordan and Israel have established the ports of Al-Aqaba and Eilat, respectively, as outlets to the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.
