Monastery of St. Paul of Fibei
Description:
The Coptic Monastery of St. Paul of Thebeus is located 150 km from the capital of Egypt – Cairo. It was named after a holy hermit who lived here in a cave in the fifth century. Now a large number of pilgrims come to the place of his burial. In the monastery there are other shrines - sources and manuscripts. It is believed that the first inhabitants of these regions were Syrian and Egyptian Melkite monks. The temple was often renovated after Bedouin raids. For a long time the temple was abandoned in the XVI-XVII centuries, after monks from the monastery of St. Anthony settled here. At the beginning of the XVIII century, by order of Pope John of Alexandria, the building was reconstructed and it acquired a modern look. You can come to the temple from Cairo by bus to Hurghada (230 km), go on a turn towards the monastery and then hitchhike. From Cairo, Hurghada and Luxor, the Coptic Diocese regularly organizes pilgrimage tours.
