Monastery of St. Paul of Fibeus

Egypt, Bahr al-Ahmar Governorate

Description:

Hidden in Egypt’s Arabian desert are two monasteries that feature prominently in religious and architectural histories. This is the monastery of St. Anthony and the monastery of St. Paul of Thebeus.

The monastery of St. Paul of Thebeus was founded almost from an ordinary cave. The cave became a holy place when the hermit Paul of Thebey died in it. He was a spiritually enlightened man; he served God all his life.

The monastery survived Bedouin attacks, complete looting and a hundred years of solitude. It was reconstructed in the XVIII century.

The bowels of the four temples have survived to our century. One of the parts is a dungeon with a sarcophagus. Frescoes are adorned, the spring of Paul beats.

Tourists choose a reliable and optimal option - excursions. Before the trip, stock up on comfortable shoes - you will have to go down and climb for a long time.
