Saarema Island
Description:
Saaremaa is the largest of Estonia’s 1520 islands. It is connected by a dam to Muhu Island, so the trip covers a visit to 2 islands at the same time. The path to the ferry Virtsu runs through such picturesque places as: Saue, Keila, Riisipere, Kullamaa and Lihula. Having crossed the Suur Väin Strait, on the island of Muhu we visit the village of fishermen of the 19th century - Koguva, the church of the 13th century - St. George. Catharines and Nautse Ostrich Farm. Then we go to the island of Saaremaa and get acquainted with the ruins of the Order Castle Maazi. Through the village of Leisi, where the Russian Orthodox Church of the 19th century has been preserved, we reach the cliff Panga - this is the highest outcropping of the seabed in western Estonia and Saaremaa. It rises 21.3 meters above sea level. The next interesting place is Angla, where 5 windmills are collected (previously there were more than 800 in Saaremaa) and there is an interesting museum. We pass the place of Karya, where the church of the 14th century is preserved. Now our way lies in Kuressaar - the capital of the island, where the Order Castle, the important building built in 1663, as well as the Town Hall and many other attractions have been preserved. On the way back, we will visit the Kaali crater field, which was formed as a result of a meteor shower.
