Lucia Day

Description:

Queen of Light
On December 13, Swedish-speaking schools and families in Finland celebrate Lucia Day.

This tradition was borrowed from Sweden in the early 1920s. Lucia Day used to be celebrated on the shortest day of the year, which is why Lucia, the queen of light, became so popular in the north.

The national Lucia of Finland is elected from among the ten young girls by public vote. They are raising money for charitable purposes. The collected money is received by the health organization Folkhelsan, which is the initiator and organizer of numerous health programs.
