Swedish Culture Day in Finland

Description:

Astrid Lindgren

Despite the fact that the Swedish population in Finland is only about 6 percent (the main place of their residence is the Åland Islands), Swedish, along with Finnish, is the official language.

Since 1908, the Flag Day (holidays and commemorative dates, in honor of which the national flag is raised in places established by law) is dedicated to Sweden and Swedish culture.

The most famous representatives of Swedish culture are writers. The great August Strindberg and world-famous children's writer Astrid Lindgren, author of Pippi Long Stocking and The Kid and Carlson, Karl Michael Bellaman, little known outside the Scandinavian countries, Wilhelm Moberg, a 20th century writer who won a national award for his work Immigrants and Emigrants. Carl von Linnaeus, an 18th-century scientist, was the first to catalog plants by giving them Latin names. No less famous is Alfred Nobel, the first patron of the Nobel Institute and the founder of international prizes.

Sweden’s creative culture has experienced a renaissance in the past decade. The phenomenon of contemporary Swedish culture has attracted international attention not only in traditional industries such as literature and fine arts, but also in relatively recent art forms such as design, fashion, pop music and gastronomy.
