Espoo Church
Kirkkopuisto 5, 02770 Espoo, Finland
Description:
The Espoo Church is a Lutheran church located in Finland. It was built in 1458-1480 and consecrated in honor of the Apostle Matthew. This church also served as a protection during raids and ruin.
For many years the church was rebuilt. In 1767, a bell tower was added to the building, which has survived to this day. In the XVIII century, an organ was installed here. All the walls and vaults were decorated with frescoes with scenes from the Bible and paintings from the everyday life of the citizens of Espoo.
At the end of the XVIII century, the frescoes were painted over, considering them rude. However, restoration work carried out at the beginning of the XX century returned all the paintings in their original form. In 1982, the wooden sculpture “The Passion of Christ” returned here, which had been in the National Museum for a long time.
In 2004, the Espoo Church by the decision of the diocese became a Cathedral. In the evenings you can listen to concerts of organ music.
