Helsinki Assumption Cathedral

Kanavakatu 1, Katajanokka, Helsinki

Description:

Currently, the Assumption Cathedral is the largest Orthodox cathedral in Northern and Western Europe. The total height of the structure is 51 meters. The cathedral is crowned with thirteen domes and gilded cupolas. The walls are made of red brick, as the humid and windy climate does not allow plaster to be applied. Visually, the cathedral resembles a stone temple of the XVI century in Kolomna, near Moscow.

The interior is decorated in Byzantine style. The dome space of the cathedral is increased due to the absence of seats, and the placement of columns near the walls gives the impression of integrity. Impressive columns are carved from solid granite blocks. In the columns rest arched vaults painted by Byzantine ornaments. The upper part of the vault and the arched overlap above the altar are decorated with a drawing of a blue starry sky with the image of the Holy Spirit in the center.

The cathedral operates according to the following schedule: closed on Monday, from Tuesday to Friday is open from 9:30 to 16:00, on Saturday it receives visitors from 9:30 to 14:00, and on Sunday - from 12:00 to 15:00. On holidays and on the eve of holidays, the Cathedral is open only for the duration of divine services.
