Monument to the Three Blacksmiths

Description:

One witch had a beautiful daughter, whom she promised to marry someone who could forge happiness. And in those ancient times, only blacksmiths were capable of this. For they were wonderful craftsmen, capable of forging not only magic weapons, amazing decoration, but also something that has nothing to do with blacksmithing, for example, the heavenly vault and the stars. Why not try to forge happiness? There were three young men ready to compete for the heart of a cold beauty and get a fragile substance:

It is not known who won the unequal battle. And many years have passed since then, so we can only guess whether it is true or fiction. However, at the intersection of Aleksanterinkatu and Mannerheimintie streets, a monument was erected to brave and hardworking heroes.

The monument “Three blacksmiths” by Felix Nylund, located in Helsinki on the square of the same name, was inaugurated in 1932. On the granite pedestal is the inscription in Latin: Monumentum – curavit – legatum – J. tallbergianum – pro Helsingfors A.D. MCMXXII. This phrase means that the monument was donated to the city of Helsinki by Pro Helsingfors, which acquired it through a donation from businessman Julius Tallberg.

During the bombing during the Soviet-Finnish war, the monument was damaged. Traces of the bombing can still be seen on the granite pedestal and anvil.
