Hietanimi Beach

Description:

Hietanimi Beach is quite close to the center of Helsinki, so many Finns come here to sunbathe and relax during the summer months. Although it is quite popular, the beach is never crowded: there is plenty of room to play beach sports (such as volleyball) and just relax with the big company. Hietanimi Beach, or Hietsu as it is called by locals, is located in the Toolo area. This huge, sandy beach is perhaps the most popular beach in the center of Helsinki.

Hietanymi Beach was not always here. In the early 20th century, this area of Helsinki was quite remote from the city center and was used as a landfill, then a landfill was formed on this site, and later it was converted into a sand repository. Sand was lifted from the bottom of the sea and brought here by barges for many years, it was never used and it just accumulated here. In 1929, residents of the area began using the site as a sandy beach. Hietanimi Beach in Helsinki (hieta - fine sand, Niemi - cape or peninsula) is one of the most visited beaches in Helsinki, despite the fact that it is created artificially. Being located close to the city center, Hietanimi Beach is now a garish summer holiday destination for locals and tourists. It is also a popular place to play beach volleyball, and in 1995 the beach volleyball tournament Beach Volley Hietsu was held here.
