Sculpture "Havis Amanda"

The Havis Amanda Fountain is located in Kauppatori Square in central Helsinki

Description:

The fountain with the sculpture appeared in 1908. The author of the sculpture is Ville Valgrens, a Finnish sculptor who lived and worked in Paris for a long time. The name "Havis Amanda" in Swedish means "Sea nymph". The appearance of the nude sculpture in the city center caused a storm of negative reviews, but despite all the censures, the sculpture remained intact to this day.

In the 1930s, there was a tradition associated with the cheerful student holiday Wappu, which falls on the eve of May 1. On this day, it is customary to wear a white student cap on the head of a nymph. And in 1995, when the Finnish hockey team won the world championship, the nymph was dressed in the national hockey uniform.
