Assumption Cathedral
Kanavakatu 1, 00160 Helsinki, Finland
Description:
The Assumption Cathedral is located in the historic center of Helsinki, Finland. The height of the temple is 51 meters. It is the largest Orthodox cathedral in Northern and Western Europe. It was built according to the project of the Russian architect Alexei Gornostaev in pseudo-Byzantine style - the building is made of red brick, crowned with spires and gilded domes with crosses. Such a very original look for Finland has its own explanation - at the time of the construction of the temple, Finland was part of the Russian Empire. Named in honor of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God.
The Assumption Cathedral was erected from 1862 to 1868. During this time, Gornostaev managed to die, so the architect Varnek completed the construction of the temple, which, however, made almost no changes to the project. The consecration of the temple took place on October 25, 1868. Remarkably, all the funds for the construction of the cathedral were collected with the help of voluntary donations.
In 2006, the domes of the cathedral were reconstructed and re-gilded.
Every year the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin is visited by almost half a million tourists.
