Imatrankoski Waterfall Canyon

Imatra, Finland

Description:

Imatrankoski Waterfall Canyon is located in the Crown Park in Imatra, Finland. It is a deep crevice, located among giant stone blocks, and impresses tourists with its giant size. Until 1929, this place was raging waterfall, which was formed 5-6 thousand years ago, when the water from the full-water lake Saimaa pierced the amazing Salpausselka ridge. Nowadays, most of the canyon is dry.

Since 1772, the great Russian Empress Catherine II introduced the tradition to come to Imatra and admire the canyon. Here a cable car was built, from which daredevils could look at the seething waterfall. But this opportunity was granted only until 1929, when a hydroelectric power station was built on the Vuoksa River.

The canyon is mainly dominated by granite rocks. Among the outstanding representatives of the flora can be noted beech, robe and oak, and bright representatives of the fauna are hedgehog, badger and deer. The air here is unusually clean, every year hundreds of people come here to gain strength and enjoy the scenery.
