Ukonkivi Island

Jolnintie 920, 99910 Inari, Finland

Description:

Ukonviki is one of three thousand rocky islands located on the ancient Lake Inari. The island received its name from the name of one of the highest deities of Ukko in the traditional beliefs of the indigenous population of Northern Europe: Finns, Sami and Karelians.

The island was considered sacred by the Sami for a long time, and therefore there were often sacrifices to the supreme gods. In the west of the island there is an ancient cave that was previously used for sacrifices. The island is accessible to visit: in summer, a small cruise ship runs from the settlement of Inari, which is the closest to the island.

The island is a candidate for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
