Evangelical Lutheran Cathedral in Oulu
Kirkkokatu / Asemakatu 6, 90100 Oulu
Description:
Oulu is the sixth largest city in Finland. It is located on the shores of the Gulf of Bothnia in western Finland. It is a major economic, educational and cultural center with more than 90 thousand inhabitants. One of the most interesting places in Oulu can be called the Evangelical Lutheran Cathedral.
The cathedral was built in 1777 by Daniel Hagman. However, during the fire of 1822, most of the wooden buildings of Oulu were destroyed, and the cathedral was also badly damaged. Recovery took almost 10 years. The basis was stone walls, but some changes were made in the parts of the roofs and spires. There was also a new central dome. So the complete reconstruction was completed only by 1845. And in 1997, a crypt was also built in the basement.
Currently, the Cathedral is a building in the spirit of neoclassicism, with its characteristic straight lines, lightness of surfaces and finishing with marble and gilding. Able to accommodate up to a thousand people, it retains a solemn atmosphere of greatness. In addition to the traditional organ for such large-scale cathedrals, inside you can see a huge model of the ship hanging under the vaults. It is a tribute to the sailors who express their gratitude to God for saving their lives.
