Porvoo Cathedral

Kyrkotorget 5-7, Porvoo, Finland

Description:

The Lutheran Cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary is the central attraction of the lovely Finnish town. The ancient building was built in the 15th century. At first, the church building was wooden, but over time the cathedral was rebuilt in stone. The ancient foundation of powerful boulders is visible at the base of the building today.

The cathedral undoubtedly looks stately and strict, and at the same time its appearance is characterized by a special spirituality. The interior design is quite strict, discreet, but is distinguished by elegance and harmony: painted vaults, original lamps, carved statues and a large model of a sailboat decorate the room.

In history, the cathedral remained as the place where the Russian Tsar Alexander I proclaimed Finland an autonomous Grand Duchy within Russia in March 1809.

Nowadays, not only worship services are held here, but also concerts.
