Pöukköl Museum of Local Lore
Poykkcolantie 4, Rovaniemi, Finland
About the company:
The Pöukköl Museum, located 35 kilometers from the Finnish city of Rovaniemi, the center of Lapland province, on the banks of the Kemijoki River, opened its doors to visitors in 1959.
The museum got its name from the name of the estate of the late XIX century, in which it is located. In 1957, the government bought the estate and its buildings - a residential house, barns and two barns from the former owner and organized a local history museum.
The museum reproduces the living conditions of the population of the north of Finland XIX-XX centuries. The exhibitions in the main building present exhibits characterizing the main traditional Lapland crafts: fishing, livestock, reindeer husbandry, hunting.
At the exhibition in the barn, visitors can see an exposition of photographs that tell about the peculiarities of national crafts, the development of the food industry and the history of the city.
The museum is open from June to August, during the short Lapland summer.
