Linnankatu Street

Linnankatu, 57130 Savonlinna, Finland

Description:

Linnankatu Street is the oldest street in Savonlinna. The name of the street is translated as "Castle", and in the old days it was called "Ratsastustie", which means "Horse Road". Linnankatu is part of the Great SuuriSavontie Road leading from Hämeenlinna to Olavinlinna Fortress. At the dawn of its history on the small street Linnankatu, the main inhabitants were artisans of the fortress Olavinlinna. Nowadays it is a luxurious elite area of the city.

Almost all the ancient architecture of the city is located on Linnankatu Street. It has preserved the classic buildings of the Finnish province of the XIX century, stretching over several blocks. These are small houses with porches located on both sides of the street, fenced off from the pavement, lined with raw stone - cobblestone, cute fences. Taking a walk along Linnankatu towards the castle, you can admire the old buildings and take great photos.
