Söderfjarden Valley

7 kilometers south of Vaasa

Description:

Söderfjarden is a clear octagonal valley with a diameter of 5-6 kilometers, located a few kilometers south of the Finnish city of Vaasa. This interesting natural object owes its birth to the fall of a huge meteorite that occurred more than 520 million years ago.

Translated from Finnish Söderfjarden means "Southern Bay" - a hundred years ago, this place was water, and the valley had access to the sea. In the early XX century, after the displacement of tectonic plates, a huge depression was drained, and now its edge marks a ridge overgrown with dwarf pine hills, whose height reaches 55 meters. In the center of the valley is an exhibition complex, which presents information about millions of years of the history of Söderfjarden.

The best time to visit the valley, through which the popular tourist trail from Vaasa to Oiberget passes, is autumn, when the colony of herons arrives here to relax and gain strength before a long migration.
