Monument to Independence Fighters

Rantakatu, Joensuu, Finland

Description:

The Independence Monument, located in the Finnish city of Joensuu, was erected in the square of Freedom Park, between the market square and the town hall building. It is dedicated to the fighters who fought for independence in 1918.

The monument is a bronze sculpture of a naked man installed on a pedestal, in whose right hand is a dagger. In his left hand, the independence fighter holds a trumpet-horn, into which he blows, urging his fellow citizens to join the fight. The inscription on the monument reads: “Defenders of holiness and independence of the Fatherland rose in North Karelia among the first to fight for freedom in 1918 and won, leaving future generations the memory of sacrifice and fiery love for the Fatherland.”
