Gardens of Roche de Dom

41 Cours Jean Jaures, 84,000 Avignon, France

Description:

The place where the park of Roche de Dom is located can rightfully be called the cradle of the city. Here were found traces of a large settlement that existed at the end of the Neolithic era. In the Middle Ages, there was a pasture here, but in 1839 the city authorities decided to turn the ancient site into a public garden decorated with statues of famous figures.

Now it is a park of about 29,000 square meters with a large pond in which swans, ducks, geese and carp live. There is a lot of entertainment for children and quiet places for a relaxing holiday in the shade by the pond or romantic walks. The observation deck offers a magnificent view of the main sights of the city - the St. Benese Bridge and the Papal Palace, as well as the opposite bank of the Rhone and two mountain ranges. The garden is adjacent to the Papal Vineyard, the beginning of the harvest in which is decisive for the harvest throughout the region. This tradition has been observed since the Middle Ages.

A visit to the gardens of Roche de Dom should be a must in the program of the visit to Avignon.
