Berlin Wall

Description:

The Berlin Wall is something that has never happened in any city in the world. One cannot understand today’s Berlin without touching on this complex and tragic topic – the political division of the city into East and West.

The unnaturalness of this division today, first of all, causes bewilderment and many questions - how it could happen, how people lived and what feelings they felt.

By the definition of many Berliners today, the Wall is “the ugliest architectural structure of the twentieth century.” Historically and politically, it is a symbol of the Cold War. For ordinary Berliners, those who have been separated from their loved ones, whose fates she has crippled, this is still an unhealed wound.

At one time, many did not believe in the possibility of its construction, as they did not believe later that it would cease to exist. As a result, the Wall remained an everyday reality for the residents of the divided city for 28 years. Soon it will be almost the same since she was gone.

In today’s Berlin, many tourists do not immediately understand what part of the city they are on which side of the former Wall. The borders are visually erased, but the memory remains in the form of information centers, markings on the streets of the city, memorials and fragments of the Berlin Wall.

In this tour you will see:
several fragments of the Berlin Wall, including the East Side Gallery,

The memorial at Bernauer Strasse,

White Cross memorial dedicated to its victims

Checkpoint Charlie,

* and an exhibition at the Palace of Tears near Friedrichstrasse station.

A good addition to this tour is a visit to the Berlin Wall Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie.
