The historic center of Berlin. Walking tour 3-4 hours
Description:
On this tour we will find a fascinating journey through the most iconic places of Berlin, starting from the 13th century and ending with futuristic modernity.
We will begin our journey at the foot of the Berlin TV Tower, and I will tell you about its secret, which was of great concern to state security officials.
We will see the double spires of the church of the St. Nicholas quarter - once in the 13th century it was here that the small fishing village of Berlin received city rights. I will tell you about the fate of the Berlin alchemists, about the white ghost and how houses move from place to place.
We are waiting for the grandiose Cathedral and the famous Museum Island, where the famous archaeological treasures, canvases of French Impressionists and sculptures of the creator of the Amber Room are stored. And, by the way, it is here that the mysterious Queen Nefertiti is next to the most powerful woman of our time.
Cross the boulevard Unter den Linden, which for several centuries has been a symbol of Berlin. In this place, it is decorated with several palaces, the oldest Berlin Opera, the elite Humboldt University, from the walls of which 29 Nobel laureates emerged, as well as the Church of St. Jadwiga.
Gendarme Square will surprise you with its exquisite grandeur, no wonder it is considered one of the most beautiful places in Germany. Let’s talk about French influence, theater, music, haute cuisine and, of course, chocolate. We can make a stop either in the Museum-Café of Chocolate, or in the store-minifactory, where you will make exclusive tiles.
Our next destinations will be Checkpoint Charlie and part of the Berlin Wall. Learn about the dramatic events of its construction, and how one family managed to make the most incredible escape through the wall.
Our path runs along the Wilhelmstrasse “street of power”, where all the main ministries of the Third Reich were located.
And here is the futuristic brainchild of 1990s architecture - Potsdamer Square. It is a place of luxury hotels, expensive apartments, offices, shops, theaters and restaurants. And this is where Sony Center is located and the Berlin Bear Film Festival is held.
We will pass the Holocaust Memorial and learn about other memorials located near the Reichstag.
And here we have the famous Brandenburg Gate, which saw kings, torch processions, Soviet girls-regulators and survivors of the dramatic events of the Berlin Wall.
We will see a memorial to the fallen Soviet soldiers. Let’s talk about the storming of the city, the military tactics of both sides and the existence of a Soviet monument in West Berlin.
The Reichstag is the main point of our journey. There are so many themes here! The birth of the German state, the First World War, the Golden Twenties, the coming to power of the Nazis, the heroic capture of the Reichstag by the Soviet army, the transfer of the capital to Berlin, the highest architectural award and the modern political system.
