Berlin

New museum

Description:

The new museum is the worst-hit of all five on Museum Island during the war, reopened less than a decade ago and today one of the most visited in Berlin.

It was here that the beautiful Nefertiti returned after long wanderings to her native walls before the war. All visitors to the New Museum, without exception, aspire to the famous Egyptian queen, following the practical advice of the author of the great find Ludwig Borchardt: “It is pointless to describe – one must look!”. You need to look and see, and so that you can appreciate the magical appeal of this beauty, I will tell you a fascinating story about Nefertiti and her wife Akhenaten, about myths, mysteries and secrets that surround this exhibit for more than 100 years.

Nefertiti is one of the main, but not the only property of this museum. Three collections under one roof - the Egyptian Museum and the collection of papyri, the Museum of Prehistoric and Early History, the Antique Collection - is 9000 exhibits, including the heritage of Amarna, the mysteries of the Book of the Dead, the Berlin Green Head, and the magical Golden Hat of the Bronze Age. And partly Heinrich Schliemann’s “Treasure of Priam”, only without the orgynal “Gold of Troy”, which is located elsewhere, and not even in Berlin.

The museum building itself is an exhibit and the pride of today’s Berlin, thanks to the unique restoration, which was carried out by David Chipperfield and received several high awards.

In one of the halls of the museum you can read a quote from Sophocles’ Antigone: “There are many miracles in the world, a man of them all is more wonderful.” In the New Museum, we will definitely find confirmation of this in the form of beautiful creations that were created and collected by simple and great people at very different times for our benefit.
