Fountain of fairy tales
Am Friedrichshain 25-32, Berlin, Germany
Description:
The fountain of fairy tales is located in Berlin, in the Friedrichshain Park. This city fountain is an architectural monument protected by the state. In 1893, the city authorities decided to design the entrance to the park. The idea of creating a fountain appeared with the architect Ludwig Hofman in the early twentieth century.
The project was developed over four years. Since 1905, Hofmann has invited three sculptors from Germany to create fabulous figures. The main work lasted six years, on June 15, 1913 the fountain was opened. Its dimensions were 90 by 172 meters. To decorate the fountain, the sculptors selected characters from the Grimm brothers’ fairy tales. Park sculptures disappeared after World War II. They were discovered in 1950 in a damaged condition behind a high wall of the garden plot. Since then, the fountain has been restored several times.
To maintain the fountain in good condition, private sponsors and the European Union systematically allocate funds.
