Alexanderplatz Square

Alexanderplatz 1, 10178 Berlin, Germany

Description:

Alexanderplatz Square is named after the Russian Tsar Alexander I in memory of his visit to Berlin in 1805. Its main attractions are the Red Town Hall, the television tower and numerous skyscrapers.

The square became the most important shopping center after the construction of the Central Market and the Titz department store in the XIX-XX centuries. Also world famous square brought the novel by Alfred Deblin “Berlin, Alexanderplatz”, written in 1929.

The area was almost completely destroyed during World War II. It began to be restored in the 60s, as well as actively built up with high-rises, which formed the modern appearance of the square.

The tallest building of the square is the TV tower, built in 1966-1969. Its height reaches 365 meters. The tower was meant to symbolize the power of communist technical thought in Eastern Europe. On the observation deck, located 203 meters above the ground, tourists climb in 40 seconds. The Telekafe coffee shop rotates above the site, which gives tourists the opportunity to sit at a table and enjoy the changing landscapes outside the window.
