Olympia Stadium
Olympischer Platz 4, 14053 Berlin, Germany
Description:
Its futuristic design Olympia stadium owes architects Gunter Benishem and Fry Otto, who used acrylic glass canopies and steel cables in the construction. Built for the 1972 Olympics, the new Germany sought to show its democracy and transparency. The wide and transparent dome of Olympia was perfect for this.
In 1974, the Olympia Arena hosted the World Cup final, and in 1979, 1993 and 1997 the Champions League finals. Until recently, the stadium was used for home matches of Bayern and Munich 1860, but after the completion of the new stadium in Munich, Olympia re-qualified as an arena for athletics competitions.
