Dresden

Fairytale Castle. Excursion by car to Moritzburg

Description:

We head northwest of Dresden, where Moritzburg is located. The main attraction of Moritzburg is the Water Hunting Castle, which arose as the hunting house of Duke Moritz in 1542-46, surrounded by charming lakes and forests. In 1723-36, by order of Augustus the Strong, it was rebuilt into a Baroque Castle with a beautiful terrace decorated with sculptures and vases. We visit the Castle, where the interior is preserved, indicating the love of the Saxon ruler for luxury - leather wallpaper, paintings, porcelain vases and hunting trophies. You will see the world’s most famous collection of horns of deer, moose and roe deer, including the largest horns of the noble deer, whose span is 2.4 meters and weight is almost 20 kg, as well as deer horns, whose age is more than 10 thousand years – a gift of the Russian Tsar Peter the Great. The white chapel with gilded ornaments and, of course, the famous "Federzimmer" - the bedroom of August the Strong with a bed decorated with a canopy made of more than a million feathers of various birds. After many years of restoration, the bedroom is again open to guests of the Castle.

The garden around the palace was a beautiful scene for masquerades and various kinds of entertainment - so popular during the Baroque. And if you are in a romantic mood, then we can walk along the paths of the park, which will lead us to one of the many ponds. Not far from the Castle is the romantic Phasanias house, built around 1775. The picturesquely rounded roof dome with a charming lantern indicates that Chinese motifs were in fashion during the Rococo era. The front part of the building with a double staircase overlooks a large pond, on the bank of which a miniature pier is built. This place served as the scenery for "Sea Battles" - the favorite pastimes of August the Strong. In 1973, in the vicinity of Moritzburg Castle, the cult German-Czech film Three Nuts for Cinderella was shot. It is no coincidence that these places attract painters and photographers. I'm sure you'll find interesting motifs for souvenir photography here.
