New Town Hall Tower
Dr.-Kulz-Ring 19, 01067 Dresden, Germany
Description:
One of the pearls of Germany is the city of Dresden - the capital of the federal state of Saxony, a city with a population of 500 thousand people. And the decoration of Dresden is its Town Hall. It was built in 1910. In 1945, it was thoroughly damaged by American aircraft, and restored, and almost from scratch, only by 1963. The town hall is located on the Town Hall Square. There is a wine restaurant under the building. The height of the town hall tower is 100.3 meters. The Town Hall complex occupies 9 thousand square meters, in different wings of the building from 4 to 5 floors. And the Town Hall has 6 courtyards, one of them is covered with a glass roof.
The very sight of the Town Hall is nothing special and remarkable. But a very interesting decoration is available at the top of the tower - a copper and gilded sculpture of the Golden Guard of the Town Hall. The statue depicts the patron of Dresden – Hercules. He scatters gifts with one hand from the cornucopia, and with the other he points to the beauty of the city that lies at his feet. Hercules’ head is decorated with the city crown. In the head of the sculpture is placed a lead box with a certificate of construction of the Town Hall and a set of gold coins.
After World War II, there was a heated debate in Dresden about Hercules' right hand, whose gesture resembled a Nazi salute to some unbalanced people. They even thought to remove the statue, but in the end common sense won - it was defended and now it pleases residents and visitors of the city, as before.
