Dresden embankment "Balcony of Europe"
Br hlsche Gasse, 01067 Dresden, Germany
Description:
The "Balcony of Europe" or "Brühl Terrace" is called the half-kilometer embankment of the Elbe in the center of Dresden, which stretches between the bridges of Augustus and Carola.
An architectural ensemble and one of the tourist attractions of Dresden, the Balcony of Europe got its current name in the XIX century. The former name refers to the name of Count von Brühl, who ordered the construction of a terrace.
Gottlob architect Friedrich Tormayer built a wide grand staircase made of sandstone, which was later decorated with two lions by Christian Gottlieb Kuhn. For free access to the terrace, passages were specially made from Münzgasse and Georg Troy Platz. Going up, tourists can admire the magnificent view of the Elbe River.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, the original buildings of Bruhl were replaced by modern buildings: Secondogenitur, Academy of Arts, Albertinum, House of Land Estates (landtag), Museum of Mineralogy and Geology, German Photo Library.
