Dresden Castle Residence

Dresden, Germany

Description:

Previously, Dresden Castle served as the residence of Saxon kings and electors. It is one of the oldest buildings in Dresden and has a combination of Romanesque and eclectic styles. The first mention of this castle dates back to 1289. In the future, the building was rebuilt many times, and its modern appearance acquired in 1901, when the last overhaul was carried out under the leadership of architects Gustav Frölich and Gustav Dunger. During the Second World War, the structure of the building survived, which was very rare.

Today there are several museums in Dresden Castle. The most popular of them is “Green vaults”, which stores the largest pear-shaped diamond of apple-green color. The weight of this 41-carat “Dresden diamond” is more than 8 grams. It is known that the Elector Augustus III bought it at a price equal to the cost of the construction of the Dresden Cathedral. Since 2006, the royal treasures have been exhibited in three halls of the palace, which were once kept in complete secrecy. Every year this place attracts thousands of tourists who want to admire a unique architectural monument.
