Dresden

Cholera fountain

Dresden, Germany

Description:

The cholera fountain is located in Dresden, in front of the Tashenberg Palace. Its height is 18 meters, the number of water jets is 40. It was built in the shape of a church spire with Gothic elements. The author of the project is Gottfried Semper.

Another name of the object is “Fountain of Gratitude”. It was established on the initiative of one of the townspeople, Captain Eugene von Gutschmid, as a memory of the miraculous deliverance from the cholera epidemic. This terrible disease raged in 1840-1841 in Saxony, claiming many lives. Only Dresden happily escaped the menacing danger.

The fountain survived the bombings of 1945. Today it is one of the few buildings of the city, preserved after all the historical tests.
