Monument to the Bastions of the Seven Planets
Description:
The monument to the bastions of the seven planets is located on the Brulean terrace in Dresden. It has a second name – the Balcony of Europe. The monument is a large bronze sculpture dedicated to the seven bastions of the fortress in Dresden.
In ancient times in the city bastions were near the Elbe and served to protect the village from the raids of enemies. In the mid-eighteenth century, all bastions were named after planets in the solar system. Thus, there were fortresses called “Sun” and “Moon”. At that time, they were also classified as planets.
The monument to the bastions of the seven planets looks quite original. At its center is a deformed ball. Then the rays come out, gradually increasing in size and turning into discs. The ball symbolizes the German land, which suffered from enemy invaders.
The monument to the bastions of the seven planets was erected in 1990. Its author was the then famous German sculptor Vanitschke Wincent.
