Dresden

Monument to Gottfried Semper

Bruhlscher Garten 2, Dresden, Germany

Description:

The monument to Gottfried Semper is located in Dresden between the Albertinum and the Academy of Arts, in front of the facade of its Exhibition Hall. The sculpture is dedicated to the great German architect who is the creator of the Opera and the Dresden Picture Gallery. The monument was erected in 1892 by the German sculptor Johannes Schilling. The figure is made of bronze and depicts Gottfried Semper standing with a drawing of the first Dresden theatre in his hand.

The Union of German Architects and Engineers allocated considerable funds for the creation of a monument to Gottfried Semper. The only members of the union who did not allocate money for the installation were the Saxon court and the city of Dresden itself. The reason for this was the participation of Gottfried Semper in the Dresden May Uprising of 1849.
