Fountain of Hafenmarktbrunnen
Sulmerstrase 36, Heilbronn, Germany
Description:
The Hafenmarktbrunnen Fountain, also known as Georgsbrunnen, is located in Heilbronn. The fountain belongs to the end of the XVI century. The central figure is a rider riding a horse, depicted in a battle with a dragon. This figure was created in 1591 by Jacob Müller. In the 1860s, the fountain was reconstructed and then changed again in 1895 when the granite sculpture was replaced with bronze.
The centuries-old fountain was destroyed on December 4, 1944 during an air raid on Heilbronn. Although teacher William Reith managed to retrieve the statue from the rubble, it was stolen before it was carried away. The remains of the fountain were eliminated in 1953. Sculptor Ernst Elin in 1955 created a new sculpture – the same rider in the fight against the dragon, but this time the rider was depicted without a horse.
