Fountain of Schangelbrunen
Description:
One of the hallmarks of the city is the Schängelbrunnen Fountain (Schä ngelbrunnen) at the Old Town Hall. This is a bronze boy who spits water every 2-3 minutes. His name is Shengel. This nickname appeared in those distant times, when Koblenz for 20 years (starting from 1794) belonged to France.
Then Koblenz was ruled by the Trier Archbishop and Prince Clemens Wenzeslaw of Saxony, who was an uncle of the French King Louis XVI, and therefore sheltered in the city many immigrant royalists who fled the revolution. But already in 1794, revolutionary French troops entered the city, they stayed here until 1813. They named it Coblence, and soon turned it into the capital of the Rhine and Moselle department.
