Fort Asterstein, Koblenz, Germany

Description:

Fort Asterstein is a Prussian military fortification of the early XIX century. The fort is located on the right bank of the Rhine and was previously part of a whole system of defensive structures Koblenz. The structure was built in the form of a semicircle with a height of two floors with two branches. Therefore, from the height of the fort resembles a head with horns. The fort got its name in honor of the Prussian general Ernst Ludwig von Astaire, who at one time commanded the garrisons of all fortresses.

After World War I, under the Treaty of Versailles, Germany pledged to destroy all its military fortifications and fortresses. Of Koblenz’s entire defense system, Pfaffendorfer Höe survived only Asterstein, who was disarmed. Now the fort has been restored, both day and night excursions are held here.
