Ehrenbreinstein Fortress
Description:
The fortress of Ehrenbrightstein is one of the most ancient sights of the city of Koblenz, built in the early XIX century. At that time, the founders of the city decided to place it at an altitude of 120 meters on the banks of the Rhine, opposite the famous German corner. The structure worked its time with honor - having the glory of impregnable, it yielded to the enemy only once, and then after a long seven-month siege.
At the beginning of the XX century, the fortress ceased to perform its functions due to the appearance of long-range guns, it was reconstructed in the classical style and received the status of a historical landmark. Interestingly, this fortress is the second largest among similar structures preserved in Europe.
Nowadays, the Koblenz Local History Museum is located in the fortress of Ehrenbrightstein, in the lower east wing of the building there is a special youth hostel designed for 157 people, with five huge auditoriums for seminars. It offers fantastic views of the city and the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine rivers.
