Roman bridges at Koblenz

Koblenz, Germany

Description:

Roman bridges at Koblenz included the Roman wooden bridge over the Rhine and the Roman wooden bridge over the Moselle. At the bottom of the Rhine, parts of wooden piles were discovered, which, according to the researchers, belonged to a structure erected by Caesar’s legionaries during the campaign against the Germanic tribes. To date, it is impossible to determine this fact, since after each trip the bridges were destroyed.

The construction of a wooden bridge across the Moselle is evidenced by the remains of piles found at the bottom, as well as coins found in the vicinity since the reign of Claudius and Arcadia. These facts suggest that the wooden bridge could have been built in the III century BC. Today on the streets of Koblenz you can see wooden structures that are approximate copies of fragments of Roman wooden bridges.
