Stolzenfels Castle

Description:

Stolzenfels Castle on the banks of the Rhine rises on the former border of three electors - Trier, Mainz and Cologne. This castle is a pearl of Rhine Romanticism and an outstanding monument of neo-Gothic architecture.

The castle was built in 1250 and its owners had the right to levy Rhine customs duties. During the War of the Palatinate Succession, it was destroyed and restored only in 1836-1842 by order of Emperor Frederick Wilhelm IV and by design of Berlin architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
