Constance

Constance - the pearl of Lake Constance

Description:

Once upon a time, the whole world looked at Constance: from 1414 to 1418, a church council was convened here and a pope was elected, the city was at the pinnacle of power. It all began 3.4 millennia before this event with a small settlement on stilts, in the place where the Rhine leaves the upper part of Lake Constance. Later the Celts came, and in the 3rd century CE the Roman Constantine Clorius founded a bridgehead here against the Alemans. In 525, Constance became the seat of bishops and remained so until the 19th century.

Thanks to the diocese and its location, Constantz developed over time into a commercial and industrial center. Today, Constance with its 78,000 population is the second largest city on Lake Constance. Thanks to two universities, a constant influx of tourists, life does not cease here either day or night.

The city is full of historical and architectural monuments. In the port rotates around its axis the statue of the Empire, symbolizing a prostitute and holding in one hand the Pope, and in the other – the naked king. How not to remember the story of Balzac...

To see all the sights of Constanta, you need to be patient, because the triumphal arch of Peter Link, the Church of St. Stefan, where the papal court that sentenced Jan Hus, and the museum dedicated to the Czech reformer, deserves attention.

However, the visitor always returns to where life rages in Constanta: on the pilgrimage. Markstette between the port and the town hall. Children play at the Kaiserbrunnen fountain. On the luxurious facades of patrician houses the evening sun shines. And in one of the many cafes and restaurants, an impressive day ends.
