History of the city of Constance

Constance is one of the oldest cities in Germany, located on the shores of Lake Constance near the border with Switzerland. More than two thousand years of history have made it an important commercial, religious and cultural center of Central Europe. Today Konstanz is known for its beautifully preserved historic center, university and rich historical heritage.

Ancient times.

The area around Lake Constance was inhabited in the Stone Age. Archaeological finds indicate the existence of settlements here for several thousand years BC.

Before the arrival of the Romans, these lands were inhabited by Celtic tribes. They were engaged in agriculture, fishing and trade across the Alps.

Due to its convenient location at the intersection of water and land routes, the region was of great strategic importance.

Roman era

The history of Constanta as a city begins during the Roman Empire.

In the I century AD, the Romans began to actively explore the region of Lake Constance. A military camp was built to protect the northern borders of the empire.

In the III-IV centuries on the site of modern Constanta there was a fortified settlement Constantia. It is believed that the name was derived from the Roman emperor Flavius Valerius Constantius or his descendants.

The Romans built:

  • fortress walls;

  • harbor;

  • roads;

  • warehouses and commercial buildings.

The city became an important stronghold on the border of the Roman Empire.

Early Middle Ages

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century, the region came under the control of the Germanic Alemann tribes.

Despite political changes, the city retained its importance due to its favorable location on trade routes.

Already in the VI-VII centuries Constance became an important religious center.

Here was founded the episcopal see, which gradually became one of the most influential in Central Europe.

The Exaltation of the Bishopric

For centuries the city was the seat of the bishops of Constanta.

The diocese of Constanta was one of the largest in the Holy Roman Empire and covered the territories of modern times:

  • Germany;

  • Switzerland;

  • Austria;

  • Liechtenstein.

The bishops had not only religious but also political power.

As a result, the city was actively developing:

  • churches and monasteries were built;

  • trade has developed;

  • Craft districts appeared;

  • The city walls were strengthened.

Hanseatic and commercial era

Although Konstanz was not one of the largest Hanseatic cities, it was one of the most important trading centers in southern Germany.

Trade routes passed through the city between:

  • Italy;

  • Switzerland;

  • Germany;

  • France.

The main products were:

  • salt

  • wine;

  • tissues;

  • grain;

  • craftsmanship.

By the XIII century, Constantz had become a rich medieval city.

Constance Cathedral 1414–1418

The most famous event in the history of the city was the Constance Cathedral.

From 1414 to 1418, the largest church congress of medieval Europe, the Council of Constance, was held here.

At that time, the Catholic Church was experiencing the Great Western Schism, when several popes existed simultaneously.

We arrived at the cathedral:

  • popes and cardinals;

  • kings and princes;

  • diplomats;

  • scholars and theologians.

The population of the city at the time of the cathedral increased several times.

The main result was the election of a single pope and the cessation of church schism.

Jan Hus and the tragic events

During the Council of Constance, an event occurred that had a huge impact on European history.

The Czech reformer Jan Hus came to the city to defend his views.

Despite promises of safety, he was arrested, declared a heretic, and executed in 1415.

His ideas later became one of the foundations of the European Reformation.

Today there is a monument to Jan Hus in Constanta.

Reformation

In the XVI century, the ideas of the Reformation became widespread among the inhabitants of the city.

Constance became one of the centers of Protestantism in southern Germany.

In 1548, however, the Holy Roman Emperor restored Catholic rule.

The bishops then moved their residence to nearby Meersburg.

This was a major turning point in the history of the city.

Thirty Years' War

During the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), Constantz escaped complete destruction, although he was repeatedly threatened and besieged.

Thanks to the strong fortifications, the city managed to preserve most of its historic buildings.

Napoleonic era

At the beginning of the XIX century there were significant political changes.

After the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire, church possessions were secularized.

Constance became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden.

The city gradually lost its role as a religious capital, but retained its importance as an important trading center of the region.

XIX century and transport development

The development of railways and shipping on Lake Constance contributed to rapid economic growth.

There are:

  • new ports;

  • industrial enterprises;

  • hotels;

  • tourist infrastructure.

Constance is becoming a popular holiday destination on the lake.

XX century

After the war, the city quickly recovered its economy and began to actively develop tourism and education.
